automatic street light circuit - Electronic Project

Introduction:

An automatic street lighting system is designed to automatically switch ON the street light alongside the roads or the light lamp just outside our house on the onset of dark weather and switch them off automatically after sunrise or during the light hours. We need to save and conserve energy because most of the energy sources we depend on, like coal or natural gas can't be replaced. Once we use them up, they are gone forever. Saving power supply is very important, instead of using the power supply at unnecessary times, it should be switched off. In any city “STREET LIGHT” is one of the major power supply-consuming factors. Most of the time we see street lights are controllers that have an LDR which is used to detect the ambient light. If the ambient of the light is below a specific value the lights are turned ON.

A light-dependent sensor is interfaced to the pic 18f452 microcontroller it is used to track the sunlight and when the sensor goes dark the LED will be made on and when the sensor finds light the LED will be made OFF. It clearly demonstrates the working of the transistor in the saturation region and cut-off region. The working of the relay is also known Microcontroller and the code is written in c language in MikroC ide, the resulting value can be seen with the help of UART or LCD display. The Automatic Street Light Control System is a simple yet powerful concept, which uses a transistor as a switch. By using this system the manual works are 100% removed. It automatically switches ON lights when the sunlight is below the visible region of our eyes.

This is done by a sensor called the Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) which senses the light actually like our eyes. It automatically switches OFF lights whenever the sunlight comes and the visible to our eyes. This project exploits the working of a transistor in saturation region and cut-off region to switch ON or switch OFF the lights at appropriate times with the help of an electromagnetically operated switch. A street light, lamppost, street lamp, light standard, or lamp standard is a raised source of light on the edge of a road and walkway, which is turned on or lit at a certain time every night. Modern lamps may also have light-sensitive photocells to turn them on at dusk, and off at dawn, and activate automatically in dark weather.

Working Principle of 7 Automatic Street Light Circuits:

Resistors are one of the most common electronic components. A resistor is a device that limits or resists current flow. The current flow limiting ability or resistance is measured in ohms, represented by the Greek symbol Omega. Variable resistors (also called potentiometers and just "pots") are resistors that have a variable of resistance. You adjust the resistance turning a shaft. This shaft moves a wiper across the actual resistor element. By changing the amount of resistor between the wiper connection and the connection (s) to the resistor element, you can change the resistance. You will often see the resistance of resistors written with K (kilohms) after the number of the value. This means that there are many thousands of ohms. For example, 1K is 1000 ohm,2K is 2000 ohm and 3.3K is 3300 ohm, etc. You may also see the suffix M (mega ohms). This simply means a million. Resistors are also rated by their power supply-handling capability. This is the amount of heat the resistor could take before it is destroyed. The power supply capability is measured in W (watts) Common wattages for variable resistors are 1/8W, 1/4W, 1/2W, and 1W. Anything of a higher wattage is referred to as a rheostat.

Street lights are a major requirement in today’s life of transportation for safety purposes and to avoid accidents during the night. Despite that in today’s busy life no one bothers to switch it off/on when not required. The project introduced here gives a solution to this by eliminating manpower and reducing power supply consumption. This requires three basic components i.e. LDR, Sensors, or microcontroller.During daytime, there is no requirement for street lights so the LDR keeps the street light off until the light of the level is low or the frequency of light is low the resistance of the LDR is high. This prevents current flow from flowing to the base of the transistors. Thus the street lights do not glow. As soon as the light of the level goes high or if the light falling on the device is of high enough frequency, photons absorbed by the semiconductor give bound electrons enough energy to jump into the conduction of the band. The resulting free electron (and its hole partner) conduct electricity, thereby lowering resistance. Now the circuitry goes in on condition or the block diagram represented here starts working.

This project of AUTOMATIC STREET LIGHTS is a cost-effective, practical,eco-friendly, or the safest way to save energy. It clearly tackles the two problems that the world is facing today, saving energy and also the disposal of incandescent lamps, very efficiently. According to statistical data, we could save more than 40 % of the electrical energy that is now consumed by the highways. Initial cost or maintenance can be the drawbacks of this project. With the advances in technology or good resource planning the cost of the project could be cut down and with the use of good equipment the maintenance could also be reduced in terms of periodic checks. The LEDs have a long life, emit cool light, do not have any toxic material, and could be used for fast switching. For these reasons, our project presents far more advantages that could overshadow the present limitations.

The Automatic Street of the Light Control System is a simple yet powerful concept, which uses a transistor as a switch. By using this system manual of the works are 100% removed. It automatically switches ON lights when the sunlight goes below the visible of region of our eyes. This is done by a sensor called Light A Dependant Resistor (LDR) senses the light actually like our eyes. It automatically switches OFF lights whenever the sunlight comes, visible to our eyes. By using this system energy consumption is also reduced because nowadays the manually operated street lights are not switched off even when the sunlight comes or also switched on earlier before sunset. In this project, no need for manual operation like ON time or OFF time settings.

A street light, lamppost, street lamp, light standard, and lamp standard is a raised source of light on the edge of a road or walkway, which is turned on and lit at a certain time every night. Modern lamps may also have light-sensitive photocells to turn them on at dusk, and off at dawn, and activate automatically in dark weather. In order of the lighting, this function would have been performed with the aid of a solar dial. It is not uncommon for street lights to be on poles that have wires strung between them, and mounted on utility poles. This project exploits the working of a transistor in a saturation region or cut-off region to switch ON and switch OFF the lights at appropriate times with the help of an electromagnetically of the operated switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of automatic streetlights?

Installing automated streetlights could improve safety on roadways and in pedestrian areas at night. When sensors detect movement, the streetlights automatically turn on, providing better visibility or fewer shadows which can disguise traffic dangers.

What type of circuit are streetlights?

Streetlights on series circuits use a constant current flow and variable voltage source to supply electricity to lights connected to the circuit diagram in a loop. There are three components to a series lighting circuit diagram. constant current flow regulator, isolation transformer, and series circuit wiring.

What are the main components of an automatic street light?

This requires three basic components i.e. LDR, Sensors, or microcontroller. During the daytime, there is no requirement for street lights so the LDR keeps the street light off until the light level is low the frequency of light is low the resistance of the LDR in high.

What is the automatic light system?

Automatic lighting of the controls offers an inexpensive, effective way to minimize lighting costs, by turning unneeded lights off, and in some cases, dimming lights. There are three basic categories of automatic lighting controls: timers, daylight harvesting controls, or occupancy/vacancy controls.

Who invented automatic streetlights?

Then in 1920, William Potts, a Detroit police officer, developed several automatic traffic lights in the system, including the first three-color signal, which added a yellow "caution" light. In 1923, Garrett of the Morgan patented an electric automatic traffic signal.
